World Cup: Favourites join the fray, Wei and Esipenko snatch quickest wins

11/5/2025 – The World Cup entered a new phase on Tuesday in Goa, as chess heavyweights joined the field and the competition intensified. With the arrival of the top 50 seeds, 64 games were played in round two's first day, producing 21 decisive results. Congratulations - Ljubomir Ljubojevic turns 75!

11/4/2025 – Ljubomir Ljubojevic turned 75 on Sunday, 2 November. At the height of his career, he was one of the world's top players, ranking third behind Karpov and Kasparov in the 1980s. Huge field at the Tegernsee Open

11/3/2025 – At the start of the 28th Open International Bavarian Chess Championships (OIBM) on the picturesque shores of Lake Tegernsee, there was palpable tension on the first day of the tournament, both around the chessboards and during the breaks when the more than 500 participants from over 30 countries gathered together. As soon as the first move was made, it was clear that this was a tournament where a passion for chess met international standards. It deserved special attention not only because of its size, but also because of the quality of the competitors. World Cup: Four players bounce back on demand, Wang upsets Mendonca

11/3/2025 – The opening round of the 2025 FIDE World Cup neared its conclusion on Sunday, with most matches already producing a winner after the second classical game. Out of 78 encounters, 58 were decided without the need for tiebreaks, while 20 remain level and will continue on Monday. 11/2/2025 – FIDE has announced the return of the ChessMom Project for the 46th Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan in 2026, expanding its support for professional women players who are also mothers. Building on the success of its 2024 debut in Budapest, the initiative provides financial assistance and logistical support to help mothers compete while caring for their young children. The 2026 edition will extend eligibility to players with children under two years old.

World Cup 2025: How good are the chances for the favourites?

10/31/2025 – The first round of the World Cup will begin in Goa, India, on 1 November at 15:00 local time. A total of 206 players will compete; the oldest participant is 65-year-old Igor Efimov, while the youngest is Faustino Oro, who turned 12 in October. The prize money totals 2 million US dollars, and the top three finishers will qualify for the Candidates Tournament. Matches will consist of two games, with rapid chess and blitz tiebreaks following a 1–1 score. The loser is eliminated.
